About The Field:

Puerto Rico, an unincorporated territory of the United States in the Caribbean, grapples with a range of economic and social challenges influenced by its colonial history, economic dependencies, and unique cultural identity.

Economically, Puerto Rico faces challenges such as a high unemployment rate, substantial public debt, and the impact of external economic policies. The island has long been dependent on manufacturing and pharmaceutical industries, leading to vulnerabilities in the face of globalization and changing economic landscapes.

Social challenges in Puerto Rico are diverse and impactful. Access to quality education remains a concern, with disparities in educational resources and infrastructure. Healthcare accessibility and affordability pose challenges, leading to disparities in health outcomes, especially in marginalized communities.

The historical and cultural fabric of Puerto Rico is shaped by its colonial history, primarily Spanish colonization and subsequent American influence. The majority of the population practices Roman Catholicism, and the island’s cultural expressions, language, and traditions reflect a blend of Spanish, African, and indigenous influences.

Puerto Rico’s unique status as a territory has implications for its political and social dynamics. The question of political status, whether to remain a territory, pursue statehood, or opt for independence, remains a significant aspect of Puerto Rican identity and governance.

Natural disasters, such as Hurricane Maria in 2017, have exacerbated existing challenges, including infrastructure vulnerabilities, economic setbacks, and population displacement.
